The Supervisor won the 2011 Doppelt Family Rail-Trail Champions Award for his success developing hiking and biking trails. He is one of just 25 individuals across the nation who received the honor from the Rails to Trails Conservancy, a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C., whose mission it is to create a nationwide network of trails from former rail lines and connecting corridors to build healthier places for healthier people.

Each honoree received a commemorative silver-plated railroad spike, as well as $1,000 to donate to his or her favorite local trail or trail organization. Supervisor Cox designated the San Diego Bicycle Coalition to receive the $1,000. The Coalition has been supportive of the Bayshore Bikeway project, a 24-mile bicycle facility around San Diego Bay.

“I am honored to receive this prestigious honor but, more importantly, I am thrilled that the cash award will go to a worthwhile local organization that is working to make San Diego a healthy and active community” said Cox.

“The San Diego County Bicycle Coalition is grateful for Supervisor Cox’s gift and his continued dedication to support local bicycling” said Andy Hanshaw, Executive Director.

The San Diego County Bicycle Coalition is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to making bicycling better in San Diego. The Coalition does that through educational programs, promoting awareness of bicyclists and bicycling issues, reviewing infrastructure improvements, and acting as a voice for bicyclists to elected officials and decision makers throughout the San Diego region.

Supervisor Cox received the award on October 1, 2011 at a function in Washington, D.C.
