Your experiences from Bike to Work Day

We had a lot of really great comments about your experiences last Friday. I also received one report of a horrible incident which I shall post after I’ve done some research on the subject.

steelqueen:

As I rolled out to Park Avenue today, I saw a brilliant thing: More bikes headed south to work than cars! Reports from other bicycling colleagues indicate that Kearny Villa Road through Miramar had more bikes than cars as well. Mission accomplished!

PacMUle:

today was great! North Park to Mira Mar errrrry day & normally i hardly see anyone, but today there were a few more bikes on the road than usual :) a huge THANK YOU to all the volunteers who woke up at the crack-o-dawn to give warm smiles & free swag!

Breanne:

No traffic uptown to downtown. I suspect the increase in bikes helped. My ride was accompanied by several other riders as our cavalcade crossed the I-5 entrances that intersect the bike lane on Pershing. Feels much safer when there’s a big group.

Travis:

About 115 students (~25% of school) and 29 parents rode their bikes to Ocean Knoll Elementary in Encinitas, CA this morning for the Bike to School Day we organized.

Erik from Orange County:

I’m actually in OC, but my friend Allison compelled me to post a reply here.
I commute to work on bicycle on a regular basis, moreso when I don’t have an evening college course on a tight schedule. I have a short commute of 3.6 miles through Anaheim, Placentia, and Fullerton. I’ve found a nice route that provides an ample amount of space to ride, away from some of the busier streets. Each morning I pack two huge panniers, one with my work clothes & shoes, and the other with lunch and emergency bike parts. Casual Fridays make my commute easier because I don’t have to worry about putting on a business shirt or switching shoes.

Just wish I had seen more bikes on my way to work today, but most people in OC seem fixed on waiting in long traffic lines getting to work or ferrying their kids to school, even when they only live a few blocks away from the school. Their loss I think.

Ron Hidinger:

Although I’ve been a regular bike commuter for decades, I don’t remember the last time I actually rode to work on Bike to Work day. Always some excuse. But today I did. I have an abbreviated commute from an I15 park’n’ride up the hill to the Poway business park. I was earlier than usual and didn’t notice any other riders, but as I was leaving the locker room I encountered a co-worker riding up to the door.

JK:

Considering I was at work by 7AM, I was surprised by how many cyclists were out so early. A much larger turnout then last year. The UCSD pit stop was fantastic. Thanks to everyone involved.

Matt:

I biked from Euclid/Market to Coronado via the ferry. I only saw a handful of bikes, but I loved it, and I will continue to bike to work every Friday from now on.

Excellent to hear of so many positive experiences from around Southern California.

But what would a day for biking be without some irony courtesy of our friends at the City:

I shot this on Gilman Drive on the way up to UCSD…on Bike to Work Day. Thought you’d enjoy the irony.

I most certainly did, Ken.
