News and Other Links from San Diego
Happy New Year!
I’m excited about 2012 for many reasons. For one, I think this will be a year where our city is going to see even more cyclists riding, and provide even more investments to accommodate and encourage more San Diegans to ride more often.
Below are a few news bits that caught my eye:
- Channel 10 News covered the missing sharrows on Adams Avenue. Our Urban Bike and Social ride organizer, Hans Wanbichler, was tapped to provide his perspective.
- Have you been wondering what the Occupy movement in San Diego has been up to? The Reader did a writeup about their occupation.
- Bob Hawkins, our local transportation reporter at the Union Tribune, began his love affair with the bicycle when he committed to bike to work last May. In less than a year, he has gone from falling in love with riding, to full on lust of the engineering marvel that is the bicycle.
- The San Diego Family Magazine has an article on starting the year right, by bicycle.
- This is nothing to celebrate, but this strikes me as a sign of growing ridership that bicycle thefts is also increasing. However, stealing from a disabled child is even lower than your common bike thief. Thankfully, this story has a happy ending.
- The end appears to be finally in sight and Jamacha Boulevard will finally (again) have bicycle lanes for cyclists traversing the corridor.
- The Farmers Insurance Open PGA Golf Tournament will be held at Torrey Pines Golf Course on January 25-29 and the organizers are offering free bike valet parking. The San Diego County Bicycle Coalition is looking for volunteers to staff the bike valet station.
- Aldine Drive finally opens to bicycle and other traffic.
- What is now old news, a favorite bike shop in San Diego is heading north to Portland – a city that learned to cultivate and promote its bicycling culture. When I first learned the news a few months ago (and was promptly sworn to secrecy), I was crushed. Not only was Velo Cult my local bike shop, but it employed some really good friends and was a space where I came to befriend many others. I will certainly miss Velo Cult and I’m sure many others here in San Diego will as well.
