Expand the Balboa Park Bus Only Lanes
Three years ago, we launched the Safer Park Boulevard for a Better Balboa Park campaign, pushing for protected bike lanes and dedicated bus lanes along Park Boulevard.
The result has been faster bus service, safer walking conditions, and a much more comfortable biking experience. While gaps remain in the bus lane network, this was a major step forward for climate-friendly, people-first transportation.
But now, just as the City plans to introduce paid parking in Balboa Park—a necessary move to better manage curb space and encourage alternatives to driving—the Mayor’s office is considering removing sections of the bus-only lanes.
This would be a step backwards. Paid parking should support transit ridership and mode shift, not undermine it. Removing bus lanes will make travel worse for both drivers and bus riders, while contradicting the City’s Climate Action Plan.
We cannot afford to go in the wrong direction. Instead of cutting transit priority, the City should be expanding bus service and bus lanes through Balboa Park.
