Fix the Fork

Reconfigure the El Cajon Blvd, Park Blvd, Normal Street Intersection

The confusing, high-speed intersection at El Cajon Blvd, Park Blvd, and Normal Street has long been dangerous — and deadly. It’s a hotspot for crashes, near-misses, and, tragically, fatal collisions, including the 2023 death of Josh Gilliland. With new housing, increasing pedestrian and bike activity, and major transit stops nearby, the stakes continue to rise.

Despite minor improvements over the years, the intersection remains hostile to people walking, biking, and taking transit. The City must act before more lives are lost.

🛑 It’s time to fix this intersection.

📬 Tell Councilmember Stephen Whitburn, Mayor Todd Gloria, and the San Diego Department of Transportation: conduct a formal study and implement a quick-build roundabout with pedestrian safety islands and protected bike access.

This isn't just a community ask — it’s a growing citywide demand:

The Uptown Community Planning Group and North Park Planning Committee came together to issue a joint letter calling for change. They were joined by Assemblymember Chris Ward, who sent a formal letter of support, and the University Heights Community Association, which submitted a letter as well.

In response, Councilmember Whitburn has launched a petition campaign of his own, echoing our call for action:

Now it's your turn to speak up. Let’s make this intersection safe for everyone — before another tragedy strikes.👉 Take action! Send the City, Councilmember, and Transportation department an email to prioritize this intersection in the upcoming budget
