Next Saturday: 2012 Midnight Madness

One of California’s most popular annual bike rides, Midnight Madness, originally began in 1973 and will be held for the 39th year next Saturday on August 18th.

Midnight Madness Fun Bike Ride. Starting on August 18, 2012 from 8PM – 2AM

The ride is organized by Hostelling International (formerly American Youth Hostels), an organization that was the region’s first bike advocacy organization. This organization was founded by what was quite possibly the most enthusiastic bike advocate San Diego has ever been home to, Clifford Graves. Today the ride continues, spreading the joy and fun of riding in San Diego – at night and in costumes.

Proceeds from Midnight Madness benefit community youth programs. The ride begins at midnight and is a party on wheels complete with costumes, prizes and plenty of good natured fun.

This year, the organizers have made the ride even more accessible to families (with a modified route) and making it even more fun by incorporating a festival that will take place after the ride. Ken Eby-Gomez, Midnight Madness’ Event Coordinator states that the ride is for every cyclist “since it is relatively short [ride] and follows a mellow route.” He states that the focus is to be true to Hostelling International’s mission by “bringing together all cyclists and celebrating cycling and showcasing bike advocacy in our area.” The festival will have local food vendors, booths hosted by our local bike cooperative, local bike shops and companies and our Tijuana neighbors such as Bici Estacion.

This year’s Midnight Madness will be held on August 18 beginning at Spanish Landing Park. The ride leaves at 9pm. The best way to ride is to register at the website.

Below is a video of the ride that gives a good idea of what to expect from Midnight Madness.
