Announcing the 55th Annual HI-USA Christmas Bike Trip

Registration is now open for the 55th Annual HI-USA Christmas Bike Trip, which is scheduled for December 26-31, 2011. Every year since 1956, bicyclists from all over the country have participated in this exciting and challenging cycling tradition. Organized by Hostelling International USA, San Diego Council, the Christmas Bike Trip features a 400-mile route through the mountains, desert, and seacoast of Southern California. Cities covered are: San Diego, Pine Valley, Warner Springs, Palm Desert, Hemet, and Fallbrook. The ride is a major fundraiser supporting the San Diego Council’s Youth Education and Outreach programs.

Hostelling International USA is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is “to help all, especially the young, gain a greater understanding of the world and its people through hostelling.” This mission is accomplished by providing programs and inexpensive accommodations designed to promote cultural understanding and global awareness through travel and shared experiences. The San Diego Council serves this mission by offering programs and accommodations in two locations in San Diego.

The Hostelling International Christmas Bike trip is one of the longest run organized trips in the United States. If you were inspired by Russ and Laura’s stories of traveling the country by bike and want to test the waters of bicycle touring, this is a great way to do it.
