Event: The San Diego Forward Plan: Does it go Far Enough?

100% Renewable San Diego: The San Diego Forward Plan: Does it go Far Enough?

San Diego Forward: The Regional Plan, is a long term strategic plan developed by SANDAG (San Diego Association of Governments) that analyses the region's development and "proposes a blueprint for a sustainable future for the San Diego region as well as a specific approach to help make that vision a reality." Specifically, 'San Diego Forward' lays out a plan until 2050 for infrastructure and transportation developments in the region, including road, rail systems, bus services and a bike plan.  SANDAGs initial plan was thwarted by the courts in 2014 after a number of organizations challenged it based on its lack of consideration of the environment. In this upcoming event, we will look into whether the new plan reaches far enough to making a San Diego a sustainable city.

Nicole Capretz, leader of the San Diego Climate action campaign, will provide her input specifically also in view of the biking, walking and transit goals set out in the San Diego climate action plan. We will hear from Jana Clark, from the Cleveland National Forest, one of the organizations that challenged the initial plan, on whether the improvements to the plan have gone far enough.  We will also hear from the executive director of BikeSD, a regional grassroots organization focused on advancing San Diego as 'a world-class bicycling city and create a more livable urban community by promoting everyday riding and advocating for bicycling infrastructure.'

Celebrate New B Street Bike Lanes at the Golden Hill Balboa Park Centennial Festival This Saturday

B Street bike lanes now have a buffer
B Street bike lanes now have a buffer

B Street in Golden Hill got an upgrade last month with new buffered bike lanes. It may be a while before we get parking protected bike lanes in this city, but for now we have a buffer between moving vehicles and bicycle riders.

To celebrate this and more good things that is Golden Hill, ride your bicycle to the Golden Hill Balboa Park Centennial Festival this weekend. We will be there to valet park your bicycles and give you an opportunity to buy some of our cool new merchandise so you can show the world you Bike San Diego.

Photos from the Bike Month Bash: Two Wheels and A Pool….Great Times At The First Annual Bike Month Bash

While riding your bicycle on El Cajon Boulevard is slowly inching its way to being glamorous, I wanted to personally thank everyone who came out to make the Bike Month Bash a success. We have a long way to go in making El Cajon Boulevard safe for bicycle riders and pedestrians but showcasing great bike friendly businesses like the Lafayette Hotel and Tiger! Tiger! is one of those routes to that end goal.

I hope everyone got to enjoy the pool and meet new people. I would also like to thank all our sponsors (The Lafayette Hotel, Sailor Jerry, Golper, Sullivan and Rivera, Hub and Spoke, Performance Bikes, UPS, Tiger! Tiger! Deco Bike Share) and our wonderful volunteers (Jeff, Vince, Aireanne, Brent, Sasha, and Andrew) and our very excellent board for their hard work in making the inaugural Bike Month Bash a huge success. I was so happy to see such a diverse group of bicycle riders, I felt that we had everyone there! A special thank you to the San Diego Police Department officers for escorting our riders and making the experience truly memorable. We had people who hadn't ridden in over four decades experience the joys of riding a bicycle - that really made the day worth while for me.

Stay tuned for the next ride scheduled to happen on July 25th - so please save the date. While we are still finalizing the details, I want to pique your interest by stating that the ride is going to be near the beach!

Hope you enjoy the short video below (thanks Dennis Stein) and the pictures below from the day.

Ride of Silence - Tomorrow (5/20/2015)

Photo from RideofSilence.org
Photo from RideofSilence.org

On May 20, 2015 at 7:00 PM, the Ride of Silence will begin in North America and roll across the globe. Cyclists will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isn’t aware of these rights, and sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves.

In 2003, Chris Phelan organized the first Ride of Silence in Dallas after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was hit by the mirror of a passing bus and was killed.

The Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph, follow the rules of the road and remain silent during the ride. There are no sponsors and no registration fees. The ride, which is held during National Bike Month, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for and honor the lives of those who have been killed or injured.
Please check the resources on this site. If there is a Ride of Silence in your area, we encourage you to join them. If there is not a ride planned in your area, please consider adding your city to the ever-growing list of sites.

The necessary expenses the Ride of Silence has to incur are met by concerned volunteers and donations.

If you don't own a bicycle, Deco Bikes can offer you a coupon to check out a bike for free (the closest station to the Bea Evenson Fountain is located in Balboa Park by the San Diego Zoo). Just email Deco at info@decobikesd.com.

Thanks to the efforts of BikeSD member, Greg Frank, this year's Ride of Silence in the city of San Diego will  happen tomorrow starting at 7PM at the Bea Evenson Fountain in Balboa Park.

Here is the route. You may RSVP here.

Ride the Bike Month Bash and Stop Bike Theft in San Diego

At the monthly Bicycle Advisory Committee meetings, SDPD officers have been giving reports on the state of various bike issues including the alarming increase of bicycle thefts. If you ride a bicycle in San Diego, you may have either had your bicycle stolen or know someone who has been unlucky enough to get their bicycle(s) stolen. The SDPD has had a bike bait program in place for years but have been unable to expand the program beyond the beach communities due to a lack of funding.

Proceeds from the The Bike Month Bash will not only support our work but also go toward expanding the Bike Bait program that was started by SDPD Officer Dan Neifer.

Expanding the bike bait program to stop thieves from stealing bicycles would also help in making San Diego a safe place to ride a bicycle. You can help make the Bike Month Bash at The Lafayette a successful ride. Ticket prices go up in two days, so don't delay in getting your tickets today.
