People for Bikes, Sign the Pledge
Posted By Thomas Bahde on March 19, 2010
So we’re a little bit late in getting this posted, but maybe a few of you haven’t heard about it yet. The Bikes Belong Coalition has launched a new initiative called People for Bikes, with the goal of getting 1 million people to take the following pledge:
I am for bikes. I’m for long rides and short rides. I’m for commuting to work, weekend rides, racing, riding to school, or just a quick spin around the block. I believe that no matter how I ride, biking makes me happy and is great for my health, my community and the environment we all share. That is why I am pledging my name in support of a better future for bicycling—one that is safe and fun for everyone. By uniting my voice with a million others, I believe that we can make our world a better place to ride.
It’s an inclusive statement that encourages all kinds of bicycle use, and it comes at a very timely moment. Not only has Google Maps finally launched their By Bike option, but Mr. Ray LaHood, Secretary of Transportation, recently sent a mash note to bicyclists all over the country. It’s a significant shift toward a broader cultural acceptance of bicycling as transportation. Of course, we still have a long way to go, but Lance Armstrong is also stepping up to combat anti-bicyclist hate speech, so maybe we’re starting to change hearts and minds after all.
Take the People for Bikes Pledge.

The cycling revolution is underway!
