Bob, some places I might pull over, others, just best to continue on. I figure now, it's best not to armchair it, and best to just ~ roll on! Hello out there to Nebraska! Must be mighty cold now!

You chose to run the stop, you weren't forced to. Drivers choose to give us little room on the road, they aren't forced to.

William--
I'm glad you didn't get hurt. I would probably have pulled over and stopped when I saw the car edging closer to me, squeezing me against parked cars. And I would, if given the chance, have admitted I was wrong. "Yes, sir, you're right. I should have stopped." That leaves the driver with nothing to say (except "Moron!!")
Here in Lincoln, Nebraska, drivers are consistently courteous--very very few exceptions. But certainly there are cyclists doing illegal and/or dumb things every day!

Hi Mike,

In life, it would be great if things were black and white, such that decisions as such were simple. They most certainly, never are. Your opinion, and the thoughts behind it are well founded, and mostly appreciated ~ even with the anger and lack of patience as you say. One day, it might be great if we could have a world were the need to operate loosely within the margins of law were not needed for survival. That day is not today.

I would also add I've been ticketed, among others, for riding LEGALLY on the roadway. So, please, keep doing the illegal things that put a black mark on the rest of us.

Or, you could have stopped. I see too many people in cars running the stop signs. When is getting there more important than safety? Justify doing it all you want, makes you no different than the people that yell at us to get on the sidewalk. They will justify, using the same logic, running us off the road or any of the other countless things they do. If you want equal treatment, start acting like an equal. At the very least, it shows a lack of respect for others. Wasn't someone else that posts on this blog hit by someone running a stop sign? I was hit by someone running a red light once. They tried to justify it by saying it was yellow. It was RED. I was hit by someone doing a u-turn in front of me. They tried to justify it by saying they were late for class and needed to get to a parking space. As such, I have no patience for those that try to justify their illegal acts, especially when they affect others.

I commend you on your patience! I probably would have been screaming obscenities at the guy (and no way can I back that up).

You didn't need to bring up the Idaho stop law. Could have just said, "California stop, just like cars."

I was actually taught the California stop in driver's ed. Taught not to do it, but the strong implication was that everyone does it. I think it saves a lot of gas in California, not to mention tired legs. The fact that this guy rolled a stop after yelling at you just shows that cyclists are held to a higher standard. And okay, maybe that higher standard comes about because of the more flagrant violations that some cyclists commit (like the group of club riders that came at me the wrong way in the bike lane on Carlsbad Blvd. today). But on any typical day on the streets, whether I'm driving or cycling, it seems like drivers are committing way more bonehead violations than cyclists. Maybe it depends on where you drive/ride.

For instance, Seaworld Dr. to 5 north. When there's heavy traffic, typically the two through lanes will merge into the two left turn lanes. Totally illegal, but it's a workaround that the people who commute through there seem to have kluged together. Yet nobody rolls down their window and yells, "What, drivers can turn left from the right-hand through lane?" It's all a negotiation out there.

Mr. Highlander, thank you so much for stepping, er, rolling, err.. typing forward, and leaving me a note. It's good to see you were not subject to recall at this time, and that sudden acceleration is not an issue. When you see "Fred", as I'm sure you often due, send him my undying love and an invite to come ride with me. "Fred" and I can both surely use the exercise, I'd like to be worth more than 20 dollars and 1/2 a pack of camels one day.

In conclusion, thanks for the "apology" and not turning me into a skinbag of smashed bones during a much needed session of preaching of my many, many sins.

Love, and toodles,

William. :)

Sorry for my owners ignorance. "Fred" was not aware of your extensive writing/riding ability and would never have bothered you if he knew he was going to be mocked on the intertubes for so flagrantly dismissing another cyclist. He really is the moron. And fat (squishes my seats).

As a pollution spewing motor-vehicle I too don't like to stop, and prefer the flow of round-a-bouts. So I'm very envious of you and your own private idaho (and your non-fat ass :)

In conclusion, sorry about the encounter and I'm glad you didn't hurt me.
