I am very disappointed. I was on top of Palomar last year, and it was one of the greatest experiences, cycling related or not, of my life. Wonderful atmosphere, exciting event, inspiring vistas. Whatever the reason, San Diegans are really missing out on an amazing opportunity and event.

The article in today's U-T had a completely different take on why the race isn't coming here. I guess the race director gave more information at the press conference than he gave to VeloNews before the announcement. Apparently the decision to leave out San Diego was more about providing a route that satisfies the sponsor than red tape in San Diego. They say the hope to be back in future years.

The coastal route the North County Convention and Visitors Bureau chose would have been beautiful, but certainly not as inspiring as Palomar Mountain. (I'm guessing Mt. Soledad would have been the big climb on the new route.) But a lot more San Diegans could ride their bikes to view the race on the new route than was the case with the RB to Palomar to Escondido route.

Shameful! We had an international stage with last year's final stage. Many remarked how the crowd up Mt. Palomar resembled crowds in Europe. Too bad SD County can be so insular.
